Holyoke Public Schools

District Partner 2016-2017

District Facts

Holyoke Public Schools faces a confluence of urgent challenges: The district is serving an increasingly needy student population in the context of tight fiscal resources and declining enrollment, stemming from demographic changes and pressure from charter schools. In order to confront these challenges, district and community leaders must deeply understand the district’s cost structures, including school size and configuration, in order to maximize resources for instruction.

Work Focus

2016- 2017:

  • School Reconfiguration Strategy: Analyze student need and performance, school size, building utilization, and enrollment trends in order to provide recommendations on optimization of school- and grade-level configurations to enhance student experience, increase HPS’ ability to leverage teacher expertise and create grade-level teacher teams, increase resource use flexibilities within schools, and reduce costs.
  • Student Assignment Strategy: Analyze demographic and enrollment patterns in order to provide recommendations on improvements to the student assignment strategy, potentially including revisions to school boundaries. This effort could help turn the tide of students leaving the district (particularly for middle school), increase fiscal sustainability for HPS, and create greater flexibility for parents.
