Since joining ERS in 2014, Taran has worked with multiple partners across the nation, with a focus on understanding and addressing issues related to school funding and resource equity. His work has taken him to Cleveland, Oakland, Atlanta, and New York State. Recently, Taran was part of a team that analyzed financial equity across the district and charter sectors in Oakland, CA, which culminated in a publicly circulated report. He also led the analytic work for a team helping multiple districts understand and meet transparency requirements, brought about by the ESSA legislation, while leveraging said requirements to advance equity.
Taran has also been deeply involved in shaping the company's approach to data and research. As a member of the Data Management team, he has pushed forward the use of programming and statistical tools in producing ERS analytics. He recently co-created a tool in Python that explores the impact of educational interventions on student performance in different district contexts. Taran also led the creation of an internal process to systematically find and review the latest education research.
Prior to joining ERS, Taran graduated from Brown University with degrees in physics and economics. His academic exposure to education policy and data analysis, coupled with his experiences volunteering at a local high school, spurred him to join ERS.
Outside of work, Taran enjoys attempting to not forget how to speak foreign languages and playing the drums. His weekends are filled with ambitious plans of trying new food around the greater Boston area and hanging out in the city's incredible libraries with a good book or three.
