Re-Envisioning the Teaching Role in Arizona

October 12, 2023

To realize their full potential, students need access to excellent educators. But facing record numbers of vacancies and classrooms staffed by underqualified teachers, Arizona district leaders are uniquely challenged to provide the high-quality education all students deserve.

Fortunately, Arizona state policies offer education leaders considerable flexibility for organizing people, time, and money in schools. Without the rigid constraints on educator roles, teaching loads, and compensation that are common in other states, Arizona policies enable—and even encourage—innovations that can strengthen the education system by making teaching radically more attractive and sustainable. Strengthening and Supporting the Teaching Job in Arizona – A Toolkit for District and State Leaders

Working in partnership with the Arizona Community Foundation and the Steele Foundation, we’ve created a toolkit that outlines a range of high-potential innovations that account for Arizona state policies and resource constraints. This toolkit is just one contribution to local, regional, and statewide organizations’ ongoing efforts to improve teaching and learning in Arizona.

By highlighting “do now” approaches that build toward a new vision for the teaching job, this toolkit provides Arizona education leaders with actionable strategies for making teaching more dynamic, rewarding, and sustainable, ensuring that Arizona educators are set up to help all students thrive.
