Part 1: Setting the Stage for Reimagining our Roles

Strategic Budget Partner Retreat Materials

October 1, 2020

Time estimate: 3 hours
Due no later than Day 1 of the synchronous content (Monday)

Part 1: Setting the Stage begins the core content for ERS’ Strategic Budget Partner Retreat.

All sessions are designed with best practice in mind:

  • Direct instruction is complemented by moments of self-reflection and team application.
  • Ideally, teams would come together to complete each session and engage in discussion in the moment. That’s simply not possible for many of us right now. So, if you will be watching the flipped content individually, please be sure to come together to discuss insights and takeaways for you and your district.

Step 1: Viewing Guide

  • Open the Individual Viewing Guide before you begin.
  • Save a copy of this to record your responses to reflection questions as you go.

Step 2: Context setting: The role of the Strategic CFO

  • Read: The Strategic CFO Guide
    • Read p. 1-5, focusing on Introduction & Mindset Shifts
    • We will read more of the Guide in Part 3. However, if you wish to read that sooner, skim the rest and consider how your role fits into or complements the Strategic Practices outlined.
  • OPTIONAL – Read: The Education Combination (includes the dimensions of resource equity)

Step 3: The Current State of School Funding

  • Video: The Current State of School Funding[see below]
  • Handout (PDF): The Strategic System – Slides for team discussion

Step 4: District Theory of Action

  • Video: District Theory of Action[see below]
  • Handout (PDF): CFO and Team Principal Support Framework

Step 5: Characteristics of Effective Funding Systems

  • Video: Characteristics of Effective Funding Systems[see below]

Step 6: Team Discussion and Cross-District Collaboration

  • Discuss as a team (if you have not already) your questions, insights, and answers to the questions in your Individual Viewing Guide
  • Enter your team’s reflection in the Cross-District Collaborative Viewing Guide (link is on your Event page)

Next: When you’re done, return to the Events page to access Part 2: Strategic School Design.
